Box elastics braces

Joseph Thompson Comment During the course of orthodontic treatment, a patient with braces may have to wear elastic rubber bands to help with the correction of their malocclusion. They are also often used to help close spaces, or make sure spaces are closing in the right direction, and improve cross-bites and midlines. Rubber Bands for Braces.

Gift Wrapping in Japan! The small rubber or metal elastics , more commonly called rubber bands, that surround your braces are technically called elastic ligatures. A ligature is used primarily to keep the archwire held into the slot on the bracket but they can also direct the teeth in a particular direction, depending on the type of ligature used and how it is tied onto the tooth.

In order to help this happen we will have patients wear “triangle” or “ box” elastics. The typical triangle elastic hooks to one tooth on the top and two on the bottom in a – you guessed it – triangle fashion. If you have braces on your teeth, you may also be prescribed elastic rubber bands to help with the straightening of your teeth. The purpose of an elastic is to allow the patient to assist the orthodontist in the movement of their teeth. Braces often times may not be able to move teeth exactly where the orthodontist would like, thus elastics help with that movement.

Elastics are made of either latex or a non-latex material. Midline elastics connect a series of teeth horizontally. Box elastics are attached to four teeth: two on the upper and two on the bottom, forming the shape of a box.

You have many opportunities to get creative with your elastics.

This elastic will run from one side of your mouth to the other side crossing your midline. Remember, good elastic wear is a major key to the removal of your braces. It is rare that we see a patient with braces who doesn’t have rubber bands at some point in their treatment.

My 2nd premolars started touching after less than a fortnight, first premolars took a bit longer, maybe around weeks. However, the rubber bands on your braces should not hurt so much. If you need to relieve the pain from your rubber bands or your braces , it should require nothing more than a little ice or a mild pain reliever.

If you require more remedies than just this, it is a sign that your braces are not. It creates a tiny box shape. I also got a powerchain on the top and bottom of my teeth. Does anyone know how to help with the pain?
