Tooth pain radiating to other teeth

Does tooth pain radiate to other teeth? Pain may also occur after an extraction ( tooth is pulled out). Pain sometimes originates from other areas and radiates to the jaw, thus appearing to be tooth pain.

The most common areas include the jaw joint ( temporomandibular joint or TMJ ), ear pain , sinuses, and even occasional heart problems. They often have “trigger points” or areas that are tender and can even refer pain to the affected teeth. A serious but less common source of referred tooth pain is the vagus nerve, which passes near the heart and lungs, explains the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

Before it reaches the brain, the vagus nerve also passes through the lower jaw. Many brain regions responded to top and bottom tooth pain — carried by signals from two distinct branches of a fiber called the trigeminal nerve — in the same way. The Vbranch carries pain signals from the upper jaw , and the Vbranch carries pain signals from the lower jaw. Though a few moments of tooth sensitivity don’t usually indicate a dental emergency, you should see a dentist to find out the cause.

In the meantime, you can help prevent and treat tooth nerve pain at home. Now can this toothache affect the other parts of the body like neck and shoulder? Decay destroys teeth by dissolving the tooth structure. When only the enamel layer is affected it is quite painless, as the enamel has no nerve supply.

However, when decay spreads to the sensitive underlying dentine , the nerves register pain in response to hot, cold and sweet food and drinks. Pain radiating along right hand side of jaw then into teeth and sometimes in the ear. Comes and goes often lasting upto 20mins then no pain at all for hours.
