Toothache Cause: Broken Teeth or Trauma to a Tooth.

In some cases, you may know for certain what caused your toothache. If you have a toothache , until you can get to the dentist, one of the best things you can do is swish warm , salty water around in your mouth. Spit it out, don’t swallow it. Salt water is a natural disinfectant, and it can help loosen food particles and debris that may be stuck in between your teeth.

Treating a toothache with salt water can also help reduce inflammation and heal any oral wounds. Gargling with salt water mixed with warm water can make the condition of the sore tooth becomes more comfortable. Salt water can also help kill all bacteria in the mouth so that bacteria in the tooth will also die.

One home remedy for a toothache is to swish salt water around in your mouth. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt into a cup of boiling water.

When the water cools in temperature (to at least warm) swish some around in your mouth for a minimum of seconds. It will prevent swelling and cleans the toothache area. Swish around in your mouth. The salt water ‘draws’ fluid from the tissues of the affected area and reduces pressure if you have an abscess.

A number of home remedies can help , from chewing cloves to rinsing with salt water. Salt relieves only certain kinds of toothaches , predominantly those resulting due to gingival inflammation (swelling in gums). Salt creates a hypertonic medium around the swollen tissues that leads to reduction in amount of inflammation (reduce the swelling) thus reducing severe pain to a tolerable level. Rinsing with warm salt water two to three times a day may help to relieve a toothache because salt water works as an antiseptic.

It gently removes bacteria from the infected area. Rinse your mouth around the sore tooth as long as possible. It can also promote wound healing and healthy gums. Try a homemade thyme mouthwash.

Thyme has powerful antioxidant and antibacterial properties. To alleviate toothache symptoms, you can add a few drops of thyme essential oil to water and make a mouthwash. However, dissolving a teaspoon of water into a cup of boiling water is not enough to get rid of a painful tooth. It offers a good cleansing rinse, but that’s about it.

A person can try holding the ice pack or a bag of frozen peas, for example, against the outside of the cheek above the painful tooth for a few minutes at a time. Elevating your head when resting may ease some of the pressure in the area of a toothache. Rinse with warm salt water two to three times a day.

Saltwater works as an antiseptic to remove bacteria from the infected area. Salt water cleanses are often used to clean out an infected area, loosening debris and providing temporary relief. You can repeat once or twice.

The cleansing effect of the salt can get rid of some nasty bacteria or festering pus, but salt water rinses provide no long-term benefits.
